Case Study: How MKBHD Earns Through Affiliate Marketing

Background on MKBHD

Marques Brownlee started his YouTube journey back in 2008 at the age of 14, initially creating videos on his personal interests. However, it was his focus on tech reviews and gadgets that propelled his channel to stardom. Today, MKBHD boasts over 17 million subscribers, with millions of people turning to its videos for objective, high-quality reviews of smartphones, laptops, cameras, and other tech-related products.

His channel’s main appeal lies in its meticulous production quality and in-depth analysis, which resonate with tech enthusiasts and professionals alike. With such a large following and influence in the tech community, MKBHD has found a highly profitable business model by integrating affiliate marketing into its content strategy.

Affiliate Marketing: An Overview

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based marketing strategy where an individual (the affiliate) earns a commission for promoting a company’s product or service. This typically happens through links provided to the affiliate. When a viewer clicks on the link and makes a purchase, the affiliate receives a percentage of the sale.

For YouTubers like MKBHD, affiliate marketing involves inserting special tracking links to products featured in their videos or linked in the description box. These links often direct viewers to e-commerce sites like Amazon, Best Buy, or directly to the product’s official website. Affiliate marketers typically earn a commission ranging from 1% to 10%, depending on the product and affiliate program.

MKBHD’s Approach to Affiliate Marketing

MKBHD’s channel is built around reviewing a variety of tech gadgets, which naturally lends itself to affiliate marketing. His review videos often feature the latest smartphones, smartwatches, laptops, and accessories. In the video description, MKBHD includes affiliate links to the products he reviews, giving viewers a simple way to purchase the products directly through his recommendations.

However, what sets MKBHD apart is its approach to affiliate marketing. He has built a sense of trust with his audience by consistently providing unbiased, thorough, and expert-level reviews. His fans trust that his opinions are not swayed by paid promotions or brand deals, which makes them more likely to act on his affiliate links. Marques carefully integrates affiliate links into his content, making it clear that they are available without overwhelming the viewer with direct sales pitches.

Examples of Affiliate Marketing Integration

Here are some of the examples of affiliate marketing integrations.

Tech Review Videos:

In his popular smartphone reviews, MKBHD often showcases the pros and cons of a product. He then provides links in the description for viewers to buy the products, particularly through platforms like Amazon. For instance, when he reviews flagship smartphones like the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy series, he includes a direct link to Amazon, where users can easily make a purchase.

Product Roundups and Comparisons:

In addition to individual product reviews, MKBHD frequently does comparison videos and tech roundups. For example, he might do a “best smartphone under $500” video or compare the best office headsets in a specific price range. Each product in these roundups is linked to an affiliate program, allowing him to earn a commission if viewers decide to purchase based on his recommendation.

Specialized Content:

MKBHD also produces content that ties into affiliate marketing more subtly. For instance, his “Studio Tour” video showcases the high-end equipment he uses to create his content. He includes affiliate links to cameras, lenses, microphones, and other equipment he uses. Viewers who want to emulate his setup are more likely to click on the links and make a purchase.

Social Media Integration:

Beyond YouTube, MKBHD uses his Twitter, Instagram, and website to further promote affiliate products. On platforms like Instagram, where he regularly posts about new products, MKBHD often links to the products through affiliate links in his bio or swipe-up links in Instagram Stories.

Building Trust Through Content

What makes MKBHD’s affiliate marketing strategy effective is the trust he has built over the years. Unlike influencers who might promote products solely for financial gain, Marques focuses on providing value to his audience. His reviews are known for their neutrality, thoroughness, and focus on the consumer’s needs rather than simply pushing a sale.

MKBHD does not overload his audience with affiliate links or push products that do not meet his standards. He integrates affiliate marketing naturally, ensuring it does not detract from the quality of his content. This makes his audience feel more comfortable clicking on the links because they know that MKBHD is genuinely recommending products that he believes in.

Revenue Potential

While exact figures on MKBHD’s affiliate marketing earnings are not publicly available, it is estimated that he earns a significant amount from this revenue stream. With millions of views on his videos and the high cost of tech products he often reviews, the potential for affiliate commissions is substantial.

For instance, if just a small percentage of viewers click on an affiliate link and make a purchase, that can result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in commissions for a single product review. Given the nature of affiliate commissions, MKBHD’s earnings from affiliate marketing likely vary depending on the product category and the affiliate program.

However, affiliate marketing plays a key role in his overall revenue generation, along with other income streams such as ad revenue, sponsorships, and merchandise sales. Implementing deferred revenue software can help improve the accuracy of revenue recognition and ensure compliance with accounting standards.

Conclusion

MKBHD is a prime example of how YouTubers can effectively use affiliate marketing to generate substantial income. By seamlessly integrating affiliate links into his high-quality content, he has been able to monetize his influence in the tech community while maintaining the trust of his audience. His careful approach to affiliate marketing ensures that he provides value to his viewers, which ultimately benefits his brand and bottom line.

Affiliate marketing offers great potential for YouTubers and influencers, especially when they focus on promoting products that align with their audience’s interests and needs. For MKBHD, this model has proven to be a highly effective and sustainable way to capitalize on its platform’s success.
