AMD acquires Enosemi to strengthen its position in the AI hardware market. Enosemi’s expertise in silicon photonics is expected to enhance AMD’s capabilities in developing high-bandwidth, low-latency interconnects essential for next-generation AI systems. Co-packaged optics, which integrate optical components directly with processors, offer significant advantages over traditional copper interconnects by reducing power consumption and improving data transfer speeds.
Brian Amick, AMD’s Senior Vice President of Technology and Engineering, highlighted that Enosemi’s photonic integrated circuits will enable “faster, more efficient data movement” within server racks, a critical requirement for scaling AI models. He emphasized that co-packaged optics represent a transformative step in system architecture, facilitating tighter integration between compute and networking to support the performance and scale demanded by advanced AI workloads.
Enosemi’s Technological Contributions
Founded in 2023, Enosemi emerged from stealth mode with a focus on design enablement and design intellectual property (IP) for silicon photonics. The company secured a commercial agreement with Luminous Computing to license and sell silicon photonics design IP originally developed at Luminous, a key technology for AI supercomputing applications. Enosemi’s leadership team comprises seasoned professionals with expertise in silicon photonics, analog mixed signal, lasers, control, packaging, and system hardware.
AMD Acquires Enosemi To Expand AI Ecosystem
AMD acquires Enosemi to build a comprehensive AI ecosystem. Earlier this year, AMD completed the $4.9 billion acquisition of ZT Systems, a data center infrastructure provider, to develop end-to-end AI solutions. Additionally, AMD has invested over $125 million across a dozen AI companies in the last 12 months, including the acquisitions of Mipsology and Nod.ai to enhance its AI software capabilities.

Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, emphasized that the company is uniquely positioned to deliver across the AI stack, integrating industry-leading CPUs, GPUs, and adaptive system-on-chips with deep networking, software, and system integration expertise.
