Dedicated Server for FiveM: 5 Key Factors Before Buying

A dedicated server for FiveM will give you your own CPU, low-latency network, and configuration control. There are 5 things you should consider when choosing a FiveM server host: CPU clock speed, RAM capacity, NVMe or SSD storage, server location, and DDoS protection. You should be ready to pay $30-$100 per month for decent hardware.

Key Takeaways

• FiveM’s RAGE Engine relies solely on single-core; clock speed (4.0 GHz+) becomes a priority over multi-core.
• 16 GB of RAM works fine for small servers; 32 GB+ is standard for RP servers with more than 50 players.
• Storage type should be NVMe or SSD to avoid texture hitching and long MLO load times.
• Location within a range of 50 ms will ensure a sub-30 ms ping to your gaming community.
• DDoS protection is required for any gaming server, as those represent the primary target for hackers.
• A dedicated server becomes better than VPS hosting once the number of slots goes over 32 players.

Why a Dedicated Server for FiveM Is the Right Choice

FiveM is a modding platform for GTA V that enables the hosting of customized game modes, role-playing scripts, MLOs, and an entire economy on a community’s server. Given the potential of the OneSync Infinity feature by FiveM, which allows for up to 2,048 online players at once, the underlying hosting network is by far the most critical element to consider.

Hosting a FiveM server on a personal computer or a VPS is technically possible, but not feasible in terms of performance. A personal computer utilizes its processing power and memory alongside other applications running in the system. A VPS relies on shared physical hardware among all tenants on the same physical machine, and thus CPU throttling and memory usage are inevitable.

A dedicated server mitigates these issues entirely by providing exclusive access to computing resources.

Here is a direct comparison:

In case you have a professional FiveM community, then a dedicated server is the minimum level you should have, rather than an upgrade.

5 Key Factors to Consider When Choosing the Best Dedicated Server for FiveM

1. CPU Performance: Single-Core Clock Speed Is Everything

FiveM runs on the CitizenFX RAGE Engine, which processes game logic largely on a single thread. This means a server with a 4.5 GHz dual-core CPU outperforms a 3.0 GHz 16-core machine for FiveM purposes.

The target specification: Intel Core i7/i9 or AMD Ryzen 7/9 with a base clock of 4.0 GHz or higher. Providers using AMD Ryzen 9 9950X or Intel Xeon processors with high boost frequencies deliver the best tick rates and script execution speeds.

The more ticks per second you get, the better performance you have: more precise movement of vehicles, more reliable hit registration, and fewer lag problems.

For context on how CPU choice affects your entire hosting setup, the HostNOC blog has a detailed breakdown in the AMD vs Intel CPU comparison guide.

2. RAM: Scale With Your Player Count

The amount of RAM needed varies based on server size and scripts, but generally, 16 GB is a solid baseline. For larger communities, 32 GB or more is recommended.

Here is a practical RAM sizing guide:

• 16 GB: Up to 32 players, basic ESX or QBCore framework, minimal custom resources
• 32 GB: 32–128 players, full RP framework with economy, jobs, and custom vehicles
• 64 GB+: 128–500+ players, heavy MLO loads, multiple resource frameworks running simultaneously

RAM starvation is one of the top causes of FiveM server crashes. Provisioning more than you currently need gives your server headroom as your community grows.

3. Storage: NVMe or SSD Only

Solid-state drives are preferred for better load times and overall performance. Aim for at least 500 GB of SSD storage to accommodate server files and backups.

For FiveM specifically, slow storage causes 3 visible problems:

1. Texture loss during map streaming, especially with custom MLOs
2. Long loading screens when players connect to the server
3. Script execution delays when resource files are read from disk

NVMe drives solve all 3. PCIe Gen4 and Gen5 NVMe SSDs provide read/write speeds 5–7x faster than SATA SSDs, which matters when your server loads 400+ resources at startup.

Storage also grows fast. A server with 200 custom vehicles, 50 MLO interiors, and full map retextures easily consumes 300–400 GB. Budget 500 GB as a starting point and choose a provider that allows online storage expansion.

4. Network Performance and Server Location

The quality of your server’s internet connection is vital for smooth multiplayer experiences.

Bandwidth requirement: At least 1 Gbps is the standard. Servers with 10 Gbps ports (like HostNOC’s 10 Gbps dedicated servers) provide the headroom to handle peak traffic without packet loss.

Latency target: Players within 50 ms of the server experience a ping under 30 ms in-game, which is imperceptible. Beyond 100 ms, rubber-banding and desync become noticeable.

Optimal data center locations by region:

• North America: Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami
• Europe: Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London
• Asia-Pacific: Singapore, Sydney

HostNOC operates data centers in Dallas, Chicago, Miami, New York, Los Angeles, and Amsterdam, covering the primary FiveM player base across North America and Europe.

5. DDoS Protection

Gaming servers are among the most DDoS-targeted infrastructure categories online. A single volumetric attack can take your server offline mid-session and permanently damage your community’s reputation.

DDoS protection for FiveM servers works at 3 layers:

• Layer 3/4 protection: Filters UDP floods, SYN floods, and ICMP amplification attacks
• Layer 7 protection: Detects application-layer attacks specific to CitizenFX traffic patterns
• Always-on mitigation: Traffic scrubbing runs 24/7, not just during an active attack

Look for providers that offer protection at 1 Tbps+ capacity with game-specific UDP filtering. Standard “basic” DDoS protection in the 10–20 Gbps range is often insufficient for targeted FiveM attacks.

HostNOC’s infrastructure includes proactive DDoS protection monitored by a dedicated NOC team around the clock. Server Management and Support

Being a FiveM server admin, you need software that simplifies server management, installation, and updates.

You should look for server hosts that provide:

Customizable Control Panel: Easy-to-use control panels like cPanel, Plesk, and customizable FiveM control panels to make server management easier and install mods on the server quickly. The txAdmin control panel is the standard control panel for FiveM servers. Make sure that the server host offers this service to you directly without any fuss.

24/7 Customer Support: Round-the-clock customer support by skilled technicians to help you manage the server efficiently. A response time within 30 minutes is a must-have feature for game server providers.

Price-to-Performance Ratio

Dedicated servers can be expensive, so finding a balance between cost and performance is important. Look for a provider that gives you the best value for your budget without compromising on essential features like CPU, RAM, and storage.

Long-term contracts (6–12 months) typically reduce the monthly cost by 15–25% compared to month-to-month billing.

Scalability and Upgrades

As your FiveM server scales, so too do its requirements for resources. Find a host with the capacity for scalability, which means you can simply allocate more CPU, memory, or bandwidth to meet your needs.

Things to consider include:

Easy Resource Upgrades: The capacity to upgrade resources without requiring a full server move to another physical server. Providers that force a new server setup whenever extra RAM is required only cause unnecessary downtime.

Multiple Server Locations: In case you want to expand your server network internationally, having a provider with data centers in multiple regions allows you to spin up regional nodes without switching vendors.

Smart brands host smart — dedicated servers for unmatched control and blazing speed.

VPS vs Dedicated Server for FiveM: Which One Do You Actually Need?

It is the most frequently asked question by novice server admins. The choice will depend on two factors: the number of players and resource consumption.

A VPS for gaming works well for servers with under 32 players running a minimal resource list. It costs less ($10–$30/month) and deploys in minutes. The tradeoff is shared physical CPU performance under load; neighboring VPS instances on the same host can cause CPU steal, which manifests as stuttering and script delays in FiveM.

In the case when your community has reached 32 or more active players, or you use ESX/QBCore with a high resource load, you should switch to a dedicated server and enjoy the peace of mind.

Conclusion

Choosing the best dedicated server for FiveM will be based on making five key choices: CPU single-core speed, RAM amount, NVMe storage, server location, and DDoS protection. All of these are critical for ensuring the experience of each of your players in the game.

The providers listed above, HostHorde, GTX Gaming, Nitrado, and Blue Fang Solutions, represent proven options across different budget tiers. Match your current player count to the right specification tier, and plan for the next 6 months of growth when choosing your configuration.

A properly provisioned dedicated server does not just reduce lag. It builds the stable foundation your FiveM community needs to grow.
