Cisco to Acquire Astrix Security to Strengthen AI Agent Identity Protection

Cisco to acquire Astrix Security, a move aimed at addressing growing concerns around identity security for AI agents and other non-human entities operating within enterprise environments.

Cisco to Acquire Astrix Security will pave the way for a broader industry shift: as organizations increasingly deploy autonomous AI systems, traditional cybersecurity models are struggling to keep pace with new risks tied to machine identities, automated processes, and AI-driven decision-making.

Rising Need for AI Identity Security

AI agents—software programs capable of executing tasks autonomously—are becoming central to enterprise operations. These agents rely heavily on credentials such as API keys, service accounts, and OAuth tokens to interact with systems and data. However, these same credentials can become major vulnerabilities if mismanaged or exploited.

Astrix Security has built its platform specifically to address this emerging challenge. The company focuses on securing what is known as “non-human identities” (NHIs), which include AI agents, machine-to-machine connections, and automated services. Its technology helps organizations discover, monitor, and govern these identities, reducing the risk of unauthorized access and credential abuse.

The urgency of this problem is growing. As AI adoption accelerates, experts warn that poorly governed AI agents could act unpredictably or even maliciously if compromised. These risks include excessive permissions, data leakage, and unauthorized system actions—issues that traditional identity frameworks were not designed to handle.

Cisco to Acquire Astrix Security: Details of the Acquisition

While financial terms have not been officially disclosed by Cisco, multiple reports suggest the deal could fall in the range of $250 million to $350 million, with some estimates indicating a final value closer to $400 million.

Astrix, founded in Israel and backed by notable investors, has quickly gained attention for identifying what many consider a critical blind spot in cybersecurity: the lack of visibility into non-human identities. Its platform provides capabilities such as agent discovery, lifecycle management, threat detection, and centralized secrets management.

Cisco to acquire Astrix Security to integrate its technology into its broader security ecosystem, including identity intelligence, secure access, and identity and access management solutions. This integration is expected to enhance Cisco’s ability to provide end-to-end visibility and control over both human and machine identities.

Extending Zero Trust to AI

Cisco to acquire Astrix Security to extend its Zero Trust security principles to AI systems. Traditionally, Zero Trust frameworks focus on verifying every user and device before granting access. Cisco is now applying this model to AI agents, ensuring that every action performed by an autonomous system is authenticated, authorized, and monitored.

By incorporating Astrix’s capabilities, Cisco aims to create a unified platform that not only identifies AI agents but also understands their behavior in real time. This includes detecting anomalies, enforcing policies, and responding to threats at machine speed.

Industry analysts see this as a crucial evolution. AI agents operate far faster than human users and often interact across multiple systems simultaneously. Without proper controls, they can amplify security risks at scale.

Strategic Importance for Cisco

The acquisition aligns with Cisco’s broader strategy of expanding its footprint in AI and cybersecurity. In recent years, the company has invested heavily in building an integrated security platform that spans network, application, and identity layers.

With Astrix, Cisco is adding a specialized layer focused on identity and permissions for AI-driven environments. This complements its existing investments in observability, threat detection, and cloud security, positioning the company as a key player in the emerging field of AI security.

Experts note that identity is becoming the central control point for modern cybersecurity. As networks become more distributed and applications more automated, understanding “who—or what—is doing what” is increasingly critical.

Industry-Wide Implications

Cisco’s move reflects a broader trend across the technology sector. As enterprises adopt AI at scale, security concerns are shifting from traditional perimeter defenses to identity-centric models. This includes not just human users but also machines, bots, and AI agents.

The rise of “agentic AI” is particularly significant. These systems can make decisions, execute workflows, and interact with sensitive data without direct human oversight. While this brings efficiency gains, it also introduces new attack surfaces.

Regulatory pressures are also increasing. Governments and regulatory bodies are beginning to mandate stronger safeguards for AI systems, requiring organizations to implement robust security and governance frameworks.

Looking Ahead

Cisco to acquire Astrix Security to overcome the most pressing challenges in modern cybersecurity: securing the identities of autonomous systems. By combining its existing infrastructure with Astrix’s specialized capabilities, Cisco aims to provide organizations with the tools needed to safely adopt AI at scale.

As AI continues to evolve, the importance of identity security is expected to grow. The ability to monitor, control, and secure non-human actors may soon become as critical as managing human users—if not more so.

For enterprises navigating the complexities of AI adoption, Cisco’s latest move signals a clear direction for the future: security must evolve alongside intelligence, and identity will be at the center of it all.
