Snowflake to acquire Crunchy Data for $250 million to enhance PostgreSQL services. The acquisition, which was confirmed on June 2, 2025, is set to improve Snowflake’s data infrastructure offerings, particularly for organizations that rely on PostgreSQL for their critical workloads.

Crunchy Data, founded in 2016, has established itself as a trusted provider of PostgreSQL enterprise services, offering everything from database support to security and performance optimization. By acquiring Crunchy Data, Snowflake is positioning itself to offer enhanced support for PostgreSQL, one of the most popular open-source relational database systems used by businesses of all sizes.

Snowflake to Acquire Crunchy Data: A Strategic Move

This acquisition marks a strategic step for Snowflake as it looks to diversify its service portfolio beyond its renowned data warehousing capabilities. Over the past few years, Snowflake has made significant strides in expanding its ecosystem, integrating new data management, artificial intelligence, and machine learning tools. Now, with Crunchy Data’s expertise, the company aims to offer a more comprehensive suite of services that can better serve customers with complex database environments.

A Stronger PostgreSQL Offering for the Enterprise Market

PostgreSQL is widely regarded for its reliability, scalability, and flexibility, making it an attractive choice for enterprises that need an open-source database with robust capabilities. Snowflake’s acquisition of Crunchy Data reflects the growing demand for multi-cloud and hybrid cloud solutions, which have become critical for businesses aiming to integrate a variety of data sources seamlessly.

With the acquisition, Crunchy Data’s highly skilled team of engineers and PostgreSQL experts will join Snowflake, further enhancing its ability to serve customers who depend on PostgreSQL for mission-critical applications. Crunchy Data’s tools and technologies will also be integrated into Snowflake’s existing platform, making it easier for organizations to manage and scale PostgreSQL databases on Snowflake’s cloud infrastructure.

Expanding Snowflake’s Customer Base

The acquisition is expected to attract new customers who rely on PostgreSQL but have been hesitant to adopt secure data migration to Snowflake due to the lack of full PostgreSQL support. With Crunchy Data’s specialized knowledge and products now under Snowflake’s umbrella, the company is poised to capture a larger share of the PostgreSQL market, particularly within industries such as finance, healthcare, and government, where data integrity and compliance are critical.

Snowflake’s acquisition of Crunchy Data is also indicative of a larger trend within the cloud services industry, where major players are continually expanding their offerings through strategic acquisitions. By strengthening its PostgreSQL capabilities, Snowflake is signaling its intent to become the go-to platform for a wide range of data workloads, including those that involve complex, relational databases.

What’s Next for Snowflake?

The integration of Crunchy Data is expected to be seamless, with both companies promising minimal disruption to existing customers. Snowflake has assured users that it will continue to support PostgreSQL on its platform, while also enhancing its database tools to provide a more unified experience for enterprises.

As Snowflake continues to evolve, it is clear that the company is committed to maintaining its competitive edge in the data warehousing space by embracing diverse database technologies. By bringing Crunchy Data into the fold, Snowflake is not only enhancing its service offerings but also positioning itself as an even more integral part of the data ecosystem for businesses around the globe.
